Definition
A keylogger is surveillance software or hardware that records every keystroke you make on your keyboard. Although the technology is legal, most keyloggers are used maliciously to steal passwords and confidential information.
Keyloggers Examples
- 2007-present: DarkHotel exploits unsecured hotel Wi-Fi networks, tricking users into installing a keylogger through fake security certificate prompts disguised as system updates.
- 2015: Hackers targeted employees of Anthem, a US healthcare insurance firm, with phishing emails, tricking them into downloading keyloggers and stealing up to 80 million records.
Stopping a Keylogger
- Install a reliable antivirus or special anti-keylogger software
- Use a reputable password manager to avoid typing your passwords
- Update your software and OS regularly
