Installation of an ExtremeVPN on a Synology NAS Router
- Excellent Internet Access: Before configuring, ensure you have a good connection. If your internet connection is strong, interactions between the ExtremeVPN and Synology NAS networks will be more accessible. As a result, a strong internet connection is necessary for a reliable VPN setup.
- Synology NAS Compatible Device: To make this configuration work, make sure your router supports Synology NAS or purchase a Synology NAS router. If you need help determining whether your router is compatible, go through the manual.
- ExtremeVPN Premium Account: Numerous VPN services are accessible, but you must avoid installing spyware disguised as a VPN on your laptop. Many VPN services, particularly free ones, are unreliable; therefore, we recommend using an ExtremeVPN premium (paid membership) account for this setup.
- Enter your ExtremeVPN account’s membership panel using your registered login information. Navigate to the subscription page from the dashboard, then scroll down to copy your login and password.
- Select Network from the left sidebar of your Synology Control Panel. Create your VPN profile by selecting Network Interface from the top menu bar, then pick PPTP as your VPN connection mode and click Next.
- Create your VPN profile by first picking the Profile name and typing whatever you want, for example, My ExtremeVPN, ExtremeVPN IP etc. Next, select a server from the selection list, then input the ExtremeVPN credentials you copied in Step 1 and click “Next.”
- Fill out the Advanced options and choose MS-CHAP v2 from the Authentication menu. Select Maximum MPPE (128-bit) from the Encryption option. Check the “Use remote network” on default gateway and auto-reconnect when the VPN connection disconnects. Click the Apply button.
- When you click “Connect” to connect to a VPN, the status of your profile will change from Disconnected to Connecting, and then connected finally, the status of your VPN profile will adjust to Connected, and you’ll be able to check the duration of your connection, your new IP address, and the bytes transferred and received. To disconnect, simply press the disconnect button.
- From your Synology’s control panel, select “Network” and then the Network Interface tab. Look down and click “Create VPN profile.” Select L2TP/IPSec from the pop-up menu.
- Fill up the general VPN profile settings, using, for instance, “My ExtremeVPN USA” as the profile name. Then, choose your preferred server from the drop-down list of available servers, input your ExtremeVPN credentials, and enter 12345678 as the pre-shared key.
- In the advanced options, change the Authentication of your VPN profile to Choose MS CHAP v2. Select “Use the default gateway” on remote network and auto-reconnect when VPN connection disconnects. Then, to establish a connection, click Connect.
- When you click Connect, your profile’s status will change to Connecting. Please allow up to a minute, but it may take longer. When your connection is successful, the status will change to Connected.
- Log in to your Control Panel and select the Network Interface tab, then click Create, and finally, Create a VPN profile. Choose OpenVPN (by importing a .ovpn file) and then Next. From the list of accessible locations, download and extract the zip file by clicking the Linux link.
- Give your profile a name and submit your ExtremeVPN credentials. Now, click the Browse option to import the .ovpn file we downloaded in Step 8. Then, under the CA Certificate given with the ovpn file, insert the.crt file and click Next.
- Click to enable Use the default gateway on the remote network and also enable reconnect when the VPN connection disconnects and click Apply.
- Right-click your newly created VPN connection from the Network Interfaces menu and select Connect. If the connection is successful, the status below the connection name will display “Connected.”
