Definition
Scumware is malicious software that engages in deceptive or unethical practices. Its creators designed it to generate revenues through fraudulent means.
Scumware is not widely recognized or used in software development or cybersecurity and is generally synonymous with ‘malware.’ Usually, scumware is interchanged with more established terms such as adware, spyware, or unethical software.
Examples of Scumware
- Browser hijackers: These programs unauthorisedly adjust a user’s web browser settings, altering the search engine or homepage or showing unnecessary ads. Browser hijackers can also prevent users from restoring their preferred browser settings.
- Potentially unwanted applications (PUAs): These programs may have legitimate functions but are often embedded in other software or installed without the user’s consent. PUAs can include browser extensions, toolbars, or system optimizers that may be unbeneficial and can degrade user experience.
- Adware: These programs display intrusive or excessive ads to users without consent. Adware also gathers user data without permission and uses it for targeted advertising.
- Malware: Various malware types, such as Trojans, viruses, and worms, are designed to harm a user’s devices, perform malicious actions, or steal data.
- Spyware: Spyware secretly collects data on a user’s online behavior, including personal information, visited websites, and keystrokes. This information is then utilized maliciously, such as for identity theft, or sold to third parties.
