Definition
TeslaCrypt is a type of ransomware that hackers use to encrypt files on a victim’s computer and demand payment to decrypt them.
It was discovered in 2015 and has since affected many computers globally. Previously, it targeted specific computer games, but recent versions also affect other file types.
Usually, TeslaCrypt installs a Trojan horse when it infects a computer and then encrypts the victim’s files, which takes only a few minutes. Once it encrypts files, it displays a ransom note demanding payment in Bitcoin.
Paying the ransom does not guarantee that hackers will decrypt files. Fortunately, in 2016, the cybersecurity community released a free decryption tool that could decrypt files encrypted by specific versions of TeslaCrypt.
