Definition
Thick provisioning is a computing environment process in which the entire specified amount of disk space is allocated to a server or application upfront.
Unlike thin provisioning, this process doesn’t adapt storage allocation based on actual usage, which can cause storage space to be underutilized.
Thick Provisioning Applications
- Regulatory compliance: Thick provisioning guarantees reserved storage for data that requires strict regulatory requirements.
- Critical applications: Thick provisioning ensures uninterrupted access to storage or high-priority applications that require constant and guaranteed disk space.
- Fixed data sets: Thick provisioning provides a dependable storage option in environments with predictable, unchanging data sizes.
- High-performance computing: Thick provisioning is ideal for systems that need quick data access, like high-performance computing systems.
