Definition
Yellow hat hacking is a type of cyber-attack where attackers target social media accounts. They can fall under black hat hackers because they can have criminal intent.
The hackers can infiltrate social media accounts with various hacking tools for malicious purposes like distributing malware, embarrassing the brand, misusing personal information or getting revenge on a person.
How to Protect Accounts from Yellow Hat Hackers
- Create strong passwords: Use a password with more than ten characters consisting of numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters and symbols. Avoid reusing similar passwords on different accounts.
- Use a 2F: Employ a two-factor authentication to add security to your social media accounts.
- Be cautious with geotags: Avoid updating your location on public profiles, as doing so might expose useful information to hackers.
- Beware of phishing scams: Don’t open suspicious links and attachments; some may contain malware and viruses.
- Set your profile to private: A private profile reduces the information available to the public eye.
- Decline suspicious friend requests: Be wary of questionable friend requests and refrain from accepting those from unfamiliar or suspicious profiles to avoid potential hacking attempts.
