Definition
A zombie computer is a computer that a hacker or malware has compromised and taken control of without the owner’s knowledge.
Hackers can use the device’s processing power for malicious purposes, like adding the computer to a botnet for coordinated attacks (such as spam campaigns and DDoS).
Real Zombie Computer Examples
- In 2007, the Storm botnet (250,000 – 1,000,000 zombie computers) was up for hire on the dark web.
- In 2008, hackers used the Mariposa botnet (over 1,000,000 zombie computers) to steal credit card numbers and passwords.
