How to Set Up ExtremeVPN on Fresh Tomato
Installing ExtremeVPN on your mobile device, PC, or tablet is a smart way to ensure your privacy and security online. But you might have devices that don’t support VPNs or have several devices you wish to protect. This is where a router comes in!
Routers always come with pre-installed software called Firmware, which controls all the device’s functions. Setting up ExtremeVPN on your router through the firmware software can ensure a safe online experience on all your devices.
This article will provide a detailed guide on setting up your VPN on your router through the Fresh Tomato firmware. To help with our guide, we used a Linksys router flashed with the latest Fresh Tomato firmware.
Things to Note
To start this process, ensure that;
- You have a reliable internet connection
- A VPN-supported router
- A premium ExtremeVPN account (If you don’t have one yet, you can click here to buy one)
Your VPN credentials consist of your username and password that can be used for any manual VPN configuration. Follow these steps to find your ExtremeVPN credentials;
- Go to the ExtremeVPN Member Area, which you can visit through this link.
- Enter your ExtremeVPN registered email address and password.
- On the left panel, you will see a Subscription tab which you should click on.
- Scroll down the page until you see your VPN username and password.
- You can copy your ExtremeVPN credentials. Tap on the Eye icon beside your password to make it visible.
- You can now use the copied credentials in the manual configuration.
Follow the instruction below to setup Extreme VPN on your router through the Fresh Tomato router;
- Visit the router’s control panel by typing the default IP address for fresh tomato routers 192.168.1.1 on your preferred browser.
- If you already changed your IP address from the default one, type that instead on your browser.
- On the control panel, enter your router’s admin name and password. The default admin name for Fresh Tomato is root, and the password is admin.
- Click on Sign in.
- To be able to set up ExtremeVPN on Fresh Tomato, you must download the required ExtremeVPN files for routers here.
- On the firmware control panel’s left, click VPN Tunneling.
- Next, click on ExtremeVPN client.
You can now configure your ExtremeVPN following these instructions on the Basic tab;
- Check the box beside Start with WAN.
- Interface Type: TUN
- Protocol: you can choose between UDP or TCP. Note down your choice, as it is very important in future steps.
- Next, you will see Server Address/Port with two empty fields beside it. On the first field, enter our server hostname; you can find our complete servers list here. In the second field, enter port number 80 if you chose TCP earlier or 53 if you chose UDP.
- For Authorization Mode, choose TLS.
- Next, you will see empty fields for username and password. Enter the ExtremeVPN credential you copied earlier into these fields.
- Extra HMAC authorization (tls-auth), select Outgoing(1).
- Auth digest: SHA1.
- Check the box beside Create NAT on tunnel.
- Click on Save.
Next, move on to the Advanced tab and follow these steps;
- Start from the Accept DNS configuration and choose Relaxed.
- For Cipher Negotiation, select Enabled (with fallback).
- Next, go to Legacy/fallback cipher and select Use Default.
- For Compression, choose LZO Adaptive.
- On the empty field beside Connection retry, enter 30.
- Click on Save.
Almost there! Go to the Keys tab and follow the instructions below for proper setup;
- For the field beside Static key, copy and paste all the contents from the Wdc.key file you downloaded earlier in the ExtremeVPN configuration files.
- Next, on the Certificate Authority field, copy and paste all contents from the ca.ca.crt file gotten from the same configuration files.
- Leave the Client Certification and Client Key fields blank.
- Click on Save.
Finally, you can go to the Status tab and click Start Now to connect ExtremeVPN to your router.
If you ever want to disconnect from the ExtremeVPN connection, click Stop Now.
