An Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is a set of rules and guidelines that define the acceptable ways a user can use an organization’s or service provider’s resources, networks, and systems.
It ensures the user understands their responsibilities and limitations when connected to that network. Most businesses and schools insist that users sign an acceptable use agreement before accessing their networks.
Acceptable Use Policy Purpose
- Productivity: Some organizations and schools restrict users’ access to specific websites (like YouTube and social media) to foster productivity.
- Security: Limiting how users interact with your network and what content they access can minimize a cyberattack risk.
- Prevent illegal activities: An organization with strict rules that discourage downloading content illegally prevents users from becoming a liability or breaking the law.
