Definition
Backup refers to the process of creating a copy of a system’s data that a user can use to recover in the event of data corruption or loss.
Furthermore, backup can help you recover files you might have accidentally deleted. The BAK file extension is used for backing up files created by many applications, especially in a Windows OS environment.
Types of Backup
- A Full backup: It copies every specified characteristic of the data. Full backups are ideal for swift data restoration.
- Differential backup: This moves altered files and data since the latest full backup. There is no data update or record of the backup or archiving aspect.
- Incremental backup: Full backups start incremental backups. Successive backups only keep adjustments from the preceding backup. Organizations may repeat these backups at any time, storing only the latest modifications.
- Full system backup: It reinstates data, apps, and the operating system to the former state. This generates a full computer snapshot, allowing users to recreate any data modifications afterward, potentially employing an incremental backup.
- Immutable backup: WORM (Write once, read many) technology blocks storage regulators from erasing or overwriting data in this backup. Immutable backups arise with both RaaS attacks and ransomware attacks.
- Near-CDP backup: CDP (continuous data protection) is a backup that stores a copy of all data changes immediately after they are made. It is the most modern and comprehensive kind of data protection.
- Mirror backup: This is also called a full image backup. It only keeps the most recent version of the original data set. Unlike other methods, which use compressed backup files, all mirror backup files are independently saved, like the source data.
Advantages of Backup
- Preventing data loss, whether accidentally or deliberately.
- Stopping damage to storage media.
- Restoring outdated data due to corrupted files or editing problems.
- Preventing an attacker from stealing your data or inserting a virus into your system.
Restrictions of Backup
- It consumes a lot of time, depending on the size of the data being backed up.
- It occupies a large storage space.
